Beat Freaks in Zoo York

Where do they get those colorful sneakers?  Well, Zoo York mentions in their blog that they were ‘hyped’ to have the Beat Freaks represent their raw New York City brand.  Zoo York is a streetwear collection produced by Ecko Unlimited.  The company was established in 1993, originally created by skateboarders Rodney Smith, Eli Morgan Gessner, and Adam Schatz.

The trio siphoned creative inspiration from NYC’s rapidly evolving skateboarding, hip-hop, and graffiti scenes to produce a variety of culturally relevant, authentic products that were dark and gritty like New York City.

The name originates from a subway tunnel, nicknamed the Zoo York tunnel, that ran underneath the Central Park Zoo.  In the late 1970s, this tunnel became the place where Manhattan graffiti artists gathered at night.

By the dawn of the ’80s, the term Zoo York had come to firmly symbolize NYC’s underground sect of artists, b-boys, skateboarders, punks, and their various creative off-shoots.

Zoo York’s newest line of sneakers can be found at their store website.
