What do the Beat Freaks and Hellz Bellz have in common? How about bringing bold, edgy and feminine to male-dominated genres within their respective industries. Started in 2005, Hellz Bellz was founded by Lanie Alabanza, a San Diego native.  She started out as a graphic designer for Triple 5 Soul and later became ladies art director for Rocawear.  Sensing a lack of fashion options in women’s streetwear, Lanie created Hellz Bellz as:

…a tribute to the non-conforming female youth of today.  Questioning society and authority is the consistent theme in each season along with inspiration from underground cultures, music and films.  Hellz is graphic and distinct presenting a clear impression through each piece.  Each visual content is true to itself and honest.  This is more than a brand its her personality!  It is the answer to the male dominated street contemporary genre.

You can read the full interview with Lanie here on grooveffect, including her inspiration and where the name Hellz Bellz came from.  And check out a preview of the Hellz Bellz Spring 2009 collection here as well as their collaboration with Stussy for the “Ladies First!” collection.
