The Brains Behind Hellz Bellz

Lanie Hellz Bellz

Last week I attended a panel discussion hosted by LAartlab, featuring Lanie Alabanza-Barcena (Hellz Bellz), Rick Klotz (Fresh Jive), and Ben and Bobby Hundreds (The Hundreds).  Also part of the full capacity crowd were Rino, LeeJ, and Peter Rocks of My Ninja.

As Lanie (pronounced LAWN-ee) states in WhatTheHellz blog:

I was able to give them a run down on the many struggles I went thru as a female designer in the industry. It was important for me to let them know that with talent, drive, and determination you can do anything you put your mind into regardless of your sex.

There were three messages I took home from listening to them speak about what it takes to start a successful clothing brand:

  1. There are no shortcuts.
  2. If you are thinking of starting a clothing company, don’t do it.
  3. Don’t listen to what anyone tells you, especially if they tell you NOT to do something.

Paraphrasing Rick Klotz, only those naive enough and with enough determination and passion for the business will succeed in such a competitive industry.

Watch the video below to catch more inspiring words of wisdom from Lanie:
